Dr Adesina was about to break.

“Why was it your fault?” Kingsley asked.

Dr Adesina explained how he was having another bad time with his wife and Lucinda was there to comfort him as always. They got intimate, and they let down their guard. Then without warning, hugs became kisses and then they had sex. He felt as though he had betrayed her trust in him. For about three weeks he avoided her, then when he was in Abuja for a conference he heard that she had tried to kill herself by taking overdose of sleeping pills. He explained that he cried all through knowing that she didn’t want to live with what had happened between them. He returned the following day and went to see her in the hospital but realised that she was still in a comma and the doctors weren’t sure she would make it.
There was something about the way he spoke that convinced Kingsley that he was speaking the truth. Apparently, he didn’t even know that Lucinda was pregnant. It was evident that he loved her and the way his sister spoke about him, she loved him too. He spoke into the ear of the other guys and then turned to Dr Adesina.

“Get into the car”

They instructed him to drive until they were out of the woods, then they alighted but not without a warning.

“If you mention a word of this to any one, we would come for you again. Also, pray she gets better”

They left him alone with his thoughts and they disappeared into the darkness. He looked at the time it was almost 6AM. He was certain his wife hadn’t noticed he wasn’t at home, she was in the hospital working the night shift. He was feeling so uneasy and decided to drive down to the hospital to see Lucinda.

“Hello Nurse Adesina”

Called out one of the nurses attending to Lucinda

“Nurse Nkechi, I have told you I prefer to be addressed by my first name”

“No vex, Nurse Ronke, what brings you to our department so early in the morning”

“I was about ending my shift and a friend told me about one of your patients, Lucinda Emmanuel, I want to check up on her”

“Okay, she is in ward 3B. But I am the only person here so you have to go alone”

“No Problem”

Nurse Ronke walked quietly to the ward and looked at Lucinda’s face with unhidden disgust. Convinced that nobody was watching, she spoke into her ear, “Why didn’t you just die?” she pulled out a syringe from underneath her coat and emptied the content in her body. She then walked out, happy that eventually she had completed her mission.
